Brookview House

Brookview House has been helping Boston families break the cycle of homelessness and poverty to achieve personal and economic self-sufficiency since 1990.

Its mission is to provide a safe community setting and customized services to give homeless moms and kids the help and skills they need to succeed. When Brookview House opened its doors in 1990, two-bedroom apartments rented for less than $600 and families were the smallest segment of the homeless population. Since then, much has changed.

Boston’s ranking as one of the most expensive U.S. cities in which to live has left many moms and kids without a roof over their heads. Lack of affordable housing, record high utility costs, inadequate education and mortgage foreclosures are also contributing factors.

Brookview House has faced these challenges head-on, growing into one of the most successful programs for improving the lives of homeless families in Massachusetts.

Brookview House provides services to more than 100 moms and more than 200 kids per year, with 75% leaving the ranks of homelessness permanently. The program changes lives – mothers stay employed, families stay housed, and their kids stay in school and thrive.

What sets Brookview House apart is a solid commitment to a “whole-family” approach to breaking the generational cycle of homelessness and poverty. Rather than merely providing housing, Brookview House uses an innovative, life-changing model to address the many obstacles families face in maintaining housing. When moms complete the program, they can support themselves in stable homes and their kids stay in school and thrive.
